Five Must Have iPhone Photography Processing Apps for less than $15

Captured in Nepal
There are so many applications for photography to choose from these days. Looking at the list on iTunes is overwhelming. I am often asked which one is my favorite, an impossible question to answer. However I can list a few that I can't do without and that are part of my daily workflow.

I prefer to process my images on my iPad and do so 95% of the time. Therefore I always purchase the iPad version of the applications when available.

The below list of applications can be purchased for less than $15. They will provide you with a solid platform to work from when processing your images.

Filterstorm: A complex application that is a powerhouse for brushing, masking and blending. This application provides great control over brush size, softness and opacity when masking. I also use this application for detailed burning and dodging. $3.99 by Tai Shimizu

Snapseed: This is the first application I open when processing my images. I am finding that I always use Image Tune and Details. $4.99 by Nik Software

Image Blender: Simple, and to the point! I always go to this application when combining two images. It easily and efficiently allows me to choose a blending mode and move the slider to the most appealing location. Most of the time I save several versions, focusing on particular parts of the image I may later use when masking in Filterstorm. $2.99 by Johan Andersson

TouchRetouch HD: This content aware application will amaze you as it removes unwanted items from your image. Also I often use the clone tool to clean up my images. $.99 by Adva-Soft

Each of the above applications may be used several times as my layers are created. Each of them have specific tools I like to use. In my upcoming book I will be providing several step by step lessons on processing.

Impression: Watermarking - Final step. I like the ease and simplicity of this application to complete the image with my watermark. $1.99 by Blue Crowbar

I will unveil my favorite Camera Applications and Blending Filter options later this week!

4 day Palouse Workshop starts August 17th

Retired Combines in the Palouse
Today I am dreaming of my, soon to be, return to the Palouse, the rolling wheat fields in Washington State. It has been too long. I will be arriving a few days early to do some scouting with Harry Sandler. So excited to meet all the iPhone photographers who will be attending. They will soon be a little crazied like me as they discover all the wonderful ways the iPhone can capture this incredible region.
There are two spots left: Go to The Last Pixel Show for all the information.

If you can't make the workshop then sign up for my online class -

iPhone Photography courses start next Monday, July 30th. Lots of great lessons teaching blending techniques. Please see side bar for more information.

Moving

Where are you moving? Is a question I am frequently asked. I answer, "I don't know!"
I have owned my house in Cle Elum for 20 years. I loved it from the moment I saw the architect drawings. It has been my families house, a vacation rental, a place for family reunions and holiday gatherings. I have watched fawns take their first steps from my bedroom window, seen wild turkeys, raccoons, elk, skunks, chipmunks, mice and carpenter ants.
I built a dog house, a playhouse, a 3 tiered party deck and helped with a large master bedroom, bathroom remodel.
I have shoveled, blown and plowed snow. Landscaped, re-landscaped and tried again- the deer win every time!

For this chapter of my life I have just moved all of my belongs into my large detached garage so the renters can move their stuff into the house for the next year or two while their dream home gets built.

So back to where I am going to live. I am fortunate to have many options: Portland, Issaquah, the back of my car wherever it is parked, who knows maybe even New Zealand for awhile. Maybe even a few of you might find me on your couch for a few days as I travel. :-)
I will miss my home, however I am very much looking forward to the next chapter of my life...

Sheltered by the Moon

Still enjoying my study of golden processing.
Found this image of a lone tree taken near Deception Pass last fall. It makes me look forward to the capturing the lone trees in the Palouse next month at the workshop.

Liquid Gold

Enjoyed exploring a stream between two unnamed lakes while hiking in the Sawtooths. The location is unofficially called 'Hosko Falls' and the location by it 'Teri Lou Meadow'! Makes it fun to have such memories.

iPhone Photography and The Golden Hour

Alice Lake
There are many ways to be creative with the iPhone and iPad. It still amazes me that I can see an image that I admire that was captured and processed big girl style and figure out how to duplicate it iOS style.
This is an example of how you can create a rich golden image from a colorful one.

I made several variations of this image until I finally decided on this one.

Wildflowers - Yellow Columbine

Wild Columbine Flowers

Answer: YES!

Question: Is there ever a time when you work on an image for so long that you decide to post it anyways even though you wish you would have started in a totally different direction?

ToonPaint was the wildcard in this image. Crop-n-Frame was used too.

Why iPhone photography and backpacking are a perfect fit!

Incredibly ever changing Alice Lake in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area
I have just returned from a 4 day backpacking trip in the Sawtooth National Recreation area where I once again only brought my iPhone as my camera. I love nothing more than to spend about 30 minutes capturing the scene in pieces with ProHDR and then stitching the images together while the tripod is still set up with Autostitch to make sure I have the entire scene. I instantly get the gratification of seeing a 'rough draft' of the final image. Gone are the days when I would have to wait to get home to my computer and Photoshop to see if the images I captured during that amazing moment high in the mountains was really as photographically spectacular as I hoped.
For this particular image I was able to instantly see that the clouds were as dramatic as I hoped and that I had captured enough of the scene for a pleasing composition. Even though it does seem a little mean at times to show Mark (my adventure/photographic/Canon shooter boyfriend) how his image will look when he gets home to his computer and then spends countless hours stitching and blending just how terrific his image will look; I show it off anyways because I just love the result and gratification the iPhone instantly gives me. The WOW factor still amazes me.
BTW despite the fact that sheets of rain, thunder and lightening surrounded us most of the day, we stayed completely dry!

Processing was quite simple: Snapseed and Filterstorm

Delayed Course Start - July 16th start

Due to the weather conditions throughout the country and the struggles it has caused I am delaying the start of my iPhone courses a week. I hope everyone is able to cool down soon and focus on the opportunities summer warmth, hot heat, provides.

Mammoth Falls - Yellowstone

This is the best view of Mammoth Falls. The rest of it at this time is mostly barren and white. The smell and the sound adds much more to the in person experience at Yellowstone.

I have been traveling and out of connection for the last few days scheduling my posts to  appear everyday. I am thinking I am in ID now maybe hiking or backpacking in the Sawtooths. More beauty to come.
